so today I want to write about something that’s very important and personal to me. Because it’s such an incredible part of my life I didn’t want to not write about it but because it’s also something private and personal to me I am only going to write about it once.
I am a Christian.
I’ve been a more or less active Christian since 7th grade when I first encountered religion personally. I was baptized as a child but my parents decided not to influence me in whatever I want to believe in for which I am grateful. Making the decision on my own meant a lot to me and still does. I never actively made the decison, though. I sort of slid into this group of Christians, grappled with my view on religion, and steadily became closer to where I am today. I didn’t become a loyal Christian from one day to another. It was a slow process of building up knowledge and trust which led me to being a believer. And now I am still nowhere where I want to be eventually but it’s starting to take shape.
I am a Protestant (if that makes any difference). I believe there is one God who created us all. (I don’t object the evolutionary theory either though because God has a different measure of time.) I believe he loved us all from the very beginning but humans made mistakes as they do because they have the free will. I believe God loves us so much he doesn’t want to take free will away from us. Instead he sent his only son to teach us and to die for our sins. Jesus clarified there’s only one big commandment in Christianity: love. Love for yourself and your neighbor because you are fearfully and wonderfully made. And love for God because he loved us first, and he will never stop loving us. I believe that as a Christian I ought to live respectfully, lovingly, and generously. I believe life is a gift. I believe God’s beauty is all around us.
I believe because I need a reason why we are all here. If there wasn’t a God why do we have the ability to think and to question our existence. I believe because I believe in the good in people. We all make mistakes but we are all created by the very same person who created poppies, warmth, and the smell of freshly mown grass. I believe because it gives me strength knowing I am not alone; because prayer does help. I believe because I know being a Christian makes me a better person.
I am not an extremely religious person. I believe respect for others and yourself in general is more important than waiting with everything until your wedding day. I don’t like the expression “being saved” because it leaves out the fact that we actively decide whether we want to accept Jesus into our lives. Besides that, I am feminist. I kick ass. I don’t think modesty in clothes makes me a better person. I don’t think we should barricade ourselves.
Being a Christian is living life more intensively. It’s pure life because we got a new, clean soul. Being a Christian rocks! It makes me happy. It makes me get through things. It makes me appreciate things. It makes me accept other things.
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
Psalm 139:14 KJB
Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.
Jeremiah 33:3 NIV
I don’t torture you, and I don’t look down on anybody. Follow me, and learn from me; then will your life find fulfilment. What I command is good for you, and what I give you to bear is no burden.
Matthew 11:29-30 free translation from my German bible
Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT&NIV
